Illustrated City Guide: Utrecht

Laetitia from the popular French lifestyle blog Vert Cerise asked me to put together a small city guide for my hometown Utrecht (the Netherlands), and share my top ten tips with you, which I happily agreed to do. My tips and illustrations are now live on her blog, and you can read it here in French, or here in plain old English (or just skip ahead below and read all about my city)!

STRAND WEST
Oudegracht 114
Utrecht Strand West is design paradise. Situated in the age old city castle of Drakenburg (12th century), this beautiful concept store sells both expensive, brand-name design furniture and work by young and upcoming designers, a lot of them local. Upstairs you’ll also find a design agency, and an exhibition space. Worth a visit, but leave your wallet at home.

LEVEBVRE
Neude 2, Utrecht
Being nearly 30, I’ve reached this sad place in life where I can’t really afford great wines, but I’ve certainly grown out of supermarket plonk. Fortunately, there’s Levebvre. Located on the big ‘party square’ of Utrecht, this stylish winebar is fun and affordable, but has a great selection of wines. My friends and I love to meet up here after a long week, drink wine, nibble on the vegetarian kroketten (!), and pretend we’re all grown up.

STAN & CO
Ganzenmarkt 16a, Utrecht
Stan & Co is popular amongst local bloggers, and as soon as you walk in, you’ll understand why. The decor is hip, in a New York kind of way, and they serve any kind of lattefrappomacchiato thing you want. They also have good food, though, and it’s a relaxing and informal place to just hang out with friends, or by yourself with a book. The staff will take care of you.

MENEER SMAKERS
Nobelstraat 143, Utrecht
Everyone knows that simple yet stylish Meneer Smakers has the best burger in town, and the place is always packed, especially on Saturday night. The burgers are named after the fictitious family Smakers, and my favorite is the Mevrouw (Lady) Smakers – tasty tasty! Also, if you can handle it, order some fries on the side, with mayonnaise, of course. PS: There is a delicious vegetarian option on the menu as well.

EMMA B
Oudegracht 218, Utrecht
Emma B is a cute little store along the Oude Gracht (the main canal), home of Scandinavian Design. Every time I walk in there, I want to just rent a truck and buy everything there. Another place to go into sans wallet, but oh so pretty. Also – once you’re on the canal, take a look ‘downstairs’, where the old store houses along the water have been turned into houses, shops, and cafes. Makes for a fun, cool, walk in summer and a romantic stroll in fall.

LEPELENBURG
Lepelenburg, Utrecht
When the old city wall was torn down (for the most part), the area was turned into a city park. My husband and I love running along the many footpaths, but even more than this, we enjoy hanging out in the bit of the park called Lepelenburg. What was once home to Utrecht’s main defensive towers, now is a lovely sun-flooded stretch of grass in the middle of the city and in summer you’ll see students, families, and circus folk (no kidding) light up their portable BBQ and sip on beer and rosé.

HOOI
BurgemeesterReigerstraat 25, Utrecht
Local, fresh, and organic – that’s what’s on the menu of Hooi. A great place for breakfast or lunch, I personally absolutely adore their high tea menu full of home made sweets, glutenfree bread, great coffe, and salty little pastries. A great bonus is the fact that much of the art on the walls, and fun interior design details, were done by local artists!

CENTRAAL MUSEUM & NIJNTJE MUSEUM
Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht
Even though I could do an entire city guide on Utrecht’s cultural wealth, I just couldn’t go without mentioning the Centraal Museum and, the adjoining, Nijntje (or Miffy) Museum. Whereas the Nijntje Museum mostly draws in kids and Japanese tourists (and ok, me), the Centraal Museum has a fascinating collection of historical art (and especially Utrecht masters), and a great variety of contemporary exhibitions on fashion and industrial designers.

LOUIS HARTLOOPER COMPLEX
Tolsteegbrug 1, Utrecht
Most Friday nights, you’ll find me here. The Louis Hartlooper Complex, named after a local guru in Utrecht film history, is my favorite art house cinema in town. I love having a quick bite inside the remarkable building (the old police station), or if weather permits, outside overlooking the Tolsteeg Square, before heading off to see a movie. Don’t rush finishing that beer, as you’re allowed to take your drinks with you into the theater, where one of the staff will give the audience a quick introduction about the film you’re about to see (questions are allowed).

URLAUB
Briljantlaan 5, Utrecht
Urlaub is a concept store by Ellen Vesters, illustrator, entrepreneur, and all-round inspiring lady. Though located just outside the city centre, this illustration and art-filled walhalla is worth the detour. She’s filled the place wall-to-wall with work by young designers and artists, and you’ll see creative folk sprawled about, working on their latest project. Urlaub also hosts workshops (www.immerurlaub.com) on illustration, screen printing, design, and on how to set up and run a creative business. PS: Klein Berlijn downstairs offers refreshments and food in a great, Berlin-esque atmosphere.

Journal Page: We've Moved!

© Anna Denise Floor

After a week of packing and painting, we've finally moved into our new home!
We're not sure how long we will be able to stay here (the house is for sale, we're not buying), but it's so nice to have a bit more room. Well, in theory, because to be honest, we haven't been able to unpack very much in between work and getting very addicted to sleeping in our new(ish) bed. Ahhh. Bed. I love you bed.

Oh Marie: Kitteh Crush

This month's Etsy crush for Oh Marie! Magazine is all about the kittens. Because everything actually is about kittens. And things your kittens will mind control you to buy for them. Like gorgeous kitten furniture by Vurvdesign. Absolutely stunning.

Picturing November

Oh em gee, ef em es, it's December.

I can't even believe how fast this year has gone by, it's scary.
So, in order to keep track of time at least a little bit, I decided to do one of those 'Picturing November' posts this time around. I am totally stealing this from my infinitely more talented photographer, artist, designer, super mother and blogger friend Sabra, but I'm sure she doesn't mind.

Fall Came (& Went?)

No comment. It's pretty, yes. But still. No comment.

Breakfast

I really did enjoy my breakfast this month, especially when traveling. Left: breakfast at Cornucopia in Dublin - most amazing vegan food, we ate there three times that week. On the right: breakfast at Bistrot Bruno Loubet in London. Very good croissants (for London), and just the prettiest menus and place mats.

Hair Don't

Then, I decided it was time for a hair cut. I decided wrong. Here's the before & after. I am not a fan.  I know everyone else in my tiny universe seems to love it or is kind enough to lie to me, but I am not a fan. Just can't get used to the bangs, man, you know? Ya feel me? I just can't handle it, dude.

Doodling

There was a good amount of doodling this month. Left: my doodle. Right: my husband's more poetic doodle. Oh, just so you know: the man speaks perfect French and then does jokes. In French. Illustrated French jokes. I know. I love him, but I kind of hate him, too ;-).

If this didn't satisfy your appetite, more Instagram pics can be found right over here. Enjoy!

Absolute Beginners

Journal page © Anna Denise Floor

Learning new things really is one of my favorite things in life, but it also means my list of things I suck at is longer than most people's.

Soccer? Disaster. Knitting? Ehm. Humbling? Tennis? A chapter in my life we will not speak of ever again. Walking? An ongoing battle.

But mostly - learning new things is just great fun and good practice of cultivating your 'beginners mind'. Some things I learned this week: I relearned that I actually love skiing and am pretty unafraid (we even did some little jumps!), even though I'm an absolute beginner of course . I also learned that my husband is a great teacher when I allow him to teach me new things (heh. Not that I'm usually stubborn or anything...) and that ski pants don't have to make your butt look unattractive (I know right, this was totally holding me back as well). I found out (again), that I'm apparently quite attached to my old boring hairdo. Ah. Such important life lessons here. Next up: enlightenment.  BAM!

Oh oh!

Impression of 'me' wearing 'The Knit Kid', for Oh Marie! © Anna Denise Floor

Oh, oh, oh hold on! Before we go there - I wrote/drew a post for the Oh Marie blog, where I discuss and illustrate my Etsy crushes. It'll be a monthly installment, and first up is my ongoing love for The Knit Kid. Read the post here!

Also, if you've never heard of Oh Marie!, go check it out. It's an amazing (free!) online magazine with tons of gorgeous photography, great articles, and DIY magic. Their last issue (#5) was just published and it's once again stunning. Check it out here.

I'm a fan of...

Every morning before going to work or for hours on weekends (when I'm not being chased around the park in running gear by my husband) I go through my RSS feed (I use Feedly).  I particularly enjoy reading webcomics and some of them are really pretty fantastic, so I thought I'd share. Here are three of my favorites:

Li Chen's drawings are carefully executed, often done in pencil, but occasionally she'll bust out an amazing semi-animated full color comic like this one. Often fantastical, the blog is an invitation into Li Chen's mind.

Kathy MacLeod's drawings have a very nonchalant vibe to them, but she often explores deep human emotions and isn't afraid to visualize issues like anxiety, heartache, and self-doubt in a very non-depressing way, oddly enough.

Marloes de Vries' drawings I've featured before on this blog, but I really want to again, as they're just so pretty and I love how she's able to capture a mood or a thought in one single image. #Jealous.

What are some of your favorite webcomics? Please do share in the comments below (I have no life and I already did my running for the day)!

Parasites

Oh! I totally forgot to show you guys these beauties. They accompanied an article on the healing powers of parasites (read it here) in our UCAA alumni magazine Talking Post. Great fun (especially the research bit).

What I Ate

Don't you just luuurrrve the internet? I sure do, and not just because I get to connect with far-away friends and strangers, work and collaborate internationally, and have 24-hour access to information and inspiration (someone say kittehs?). No, actually it's because I get to update everyone on what I eat all day. Heck yes, Instagram, and heck yes, drawing my food. Because I know  you care. Deeply.

Amsterdam Film Week: Iron Picker & TS Spivet

As I explained in my previous post, I got to go to the Amsterdam Film Week (for frizzles!) and draw my movie reviews for VERS magazine. After reviewing 'Argo', I went to see two more movies.

© Anna Denise Floor for VERS

'An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker' is beautifully filmed, but I found the film somewhat slow paced and the acting a little bland. The movie depicts the life of a Roma family. The mother cooks, cleans, and tends to their two hyperactive kids, while her husband picks up scrap metal from abandoned cars and junkyards. A hard life that gets worse when the wife falls ill and needs an expensive operation to survive. They can't afford the operation and a frantic search for money ensues. Dramatic, to say the least, but the non-professional actors re-enacting bits of their own life, seemed somewhat camera-shy and unable to conjure the emotions they must have felt going through the ordeal the first time.

© Anna Denise Floor for VERS

The third and final movie we got to see was 'The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet', by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also directed Amélie. Knowing this, I probably was biased before I even went to see this movie, but it did not disappoint. I laughed, I cried, I want to see it again. It's a story about a brilliant young boy, leaving his family to pick up a science award in Washington, DC. It's kind of Amélie meets Moonrise Kingdom. Full of beautiful colors, animations, jokes, and images. A feast for the eye.

I want to thank VERS magazine for this awesome challenge, as well as the Amsterdam Film Week. Yay!

Amsterdam Film Week: Argo

© Anna Denise Floor for VERS

During the Amsterdam Film Week you get to watch all of last year's 'top movies' again on the big screen, plus some smaller productions that haven't gotten enough airtime. Great news for busy people like myself, who always miss out on something awesome.

This year was even better for me, as I was asked by VERS magazine to go see three movies, and draw my reviews of them! Great fun, as knowing you'll have to draw a key scene really changes your perception.

Here's the first one for Argo, which I loved. Two more to follow, so check out VERS magazine here, or follow them on Facebook!

Look Right

 © Anna Denise Floor

Am a bit behind on posting my journal pages as you can see. These past two weeks have been absolutely nuts. I travelled to London and Dublin for work (yes, my life is actually that awesome, hate me), threw a big wedding celebration with the Fantastic Mr. Floor, somehow messed up my big toe, making it ever harder to walk normally, and generally spent a lot of time feeling Very Responsible for Everything (which is a great way to spend your time. Squiggly mouth smiley face).

Anyhow - here's a drawing. Tadah!
Now go away and ignore the fact that it's almost freaking November.

N&J's Wedding Invites

Nuria & Jochem's Save the Date © Anna Denise Floor

This summer, my best friend Nuria got married three days before we eloped (hehe). I was lucky to be one of her witnesses, and, on top of this, had the honor to create their wedding invites. I've done a few now, and I absolutely love doing them. It's such a special thing, to create something so personal for what's one of the most important moment's in people's lives. Needless to say, I was feeling the pressure, but I'm actually pretty proud of how they turned out.

For the 'Save the Date', we decided to base it off of the location in South America (Point Pirulil on Isla Grande de Chiloé to be exact) where (her) Jochem got on one knee and proposed. My friends are big travelers and the proposal came near the end of their 9-month trip around the world. Awww...

The invites had to have a weddingish food-theme - traditional but fun, and mostly delicious. They hosted their wedding at a gorgeous historical farm / restaurant in the middle of nowhere, and got married amidst the zucchini flowers growing in their organic vegetable garden. Fitting, as we're dealing with two total vegetarian food snobs here. The farm is in the background here.

The food was marvelous, as was the wine, and we turned the thank you card into a food fest as well. Nuria and Jochem left for their Italian honeymoon right after, so we included some more food, pasta, and a Fiat 500 in the design.

Overall, I'm happy with the result, but mostly - I'm just so glad I got to do this for my dear friends and helped to make their special day. It's such an honor.

Ok. That made me feel the feels. I'm out.
Have a fun weekend everyone, and see you soon!

Last Weekend

Journal page for the weekend of October 4-6, 2013 © Anna Denise Floor

Look at me posting this within the week. To be honest, I had this finished on Monday, but I had some other posts lined up and I wanted to spread them out a bit all professional-like. So here it is. If you're in Amsterdam: go see that Pixar exhibition before it ends. It's awesome. I may go back for more myself.

#Logacat

Meneertje, by Katie Noonan!

One of my favorite things to do in life is to complain. Ah, a day without the sound of my own voice nagging is like a day without coffee (and we all know that leads to scary, dark things).

So the other day I was whining about how much I miss my cat. I know, right. Tragic. Thing is, when my ex and I broke up, we decided to leave Meneertje (the cat in question) with him in Brussels. The ex has a big apartment, which happens to be the place the cat has lived his entire life, and at the time wasn't sure where I'd go and where I'd be. It seemed like the best thing I could do for the furry beast.

Anyhow, since our current mansion is wonderful but not tremendously spacious, we've decided to hold off on the kitteh-front for now until we know where we'll be next. Look at  us being all grown-up and rational and whatnot. Doesn't mean I don't miss the little loudmouth.

Some more cat portraits done by Katie!

To make a long story not much shorter but definitely not any longer: my friend and colleague Katie Noonan, crazy cat lady, self-made illustrator, and world traveler, is doing this wonderful thing where she decided to draw 300 cats on Instagram. And she drew Meneertje for me. Yay! Such a fun idea (and I wish I had come up with it). So, if you're interested in getting your furball set up with an Instagram portrait, make sure to tag her @afternoonan! Also, she sells amazing cat magnets on Etsy.

Be sure to check it out. Katie surely made my day.

Vers = Fresh

Drawings in Vers Magazine. © Anna Denise Floor

Last week saw the start of the Dutch Film Festival in my hometown. Tons of Dutch celebrities I don't recognize are said to roam the cobblestoned streets, cool looking hipster folk crowd the bars I never go to at night, and I myself walked the red carpet (it was the only way to get into the theater and kind of hard to avoid). Exciting times.

Well, actually yeah, kind of. Because the new magazine VERS ('Fresh') was presented at said festival. VERS is a magazine for 'nieuwe beeldmakers', which really doesn't translate very well, but in short: it's a magazine for those in the business of creating images or pictures, may it be film, photography, illustration, you name it.

And guess who had the honor to not only create two portraits of the editors , but also a page filling comic on the stresses of 'stepping out of your comfort zone' when self-promoting?

© Anna Denise Floor for VERS

The answer was 'me', of course. But I know you knew that.

I'm curious, though, if you're in the business of self-promotion: what makes you feel uncomfortable when it comes to doing your own marketing? Or is it 'anything goes'?

Let me know!

Watery Tuesday

It's been raining this week and Monday and Tuesday I've been mostly cooped up inside, enjoying the comforts of working from home, drinking coffee from our new machine and starving to death as obviously I wasn't going nowhere near that supermarket in this kind of weather. Ok, that's not true. Ok, it is. All I'm saying that cookies were consumed.
